Summary

During a brutal winter, a young woman longing for love finds more than she expected in the woods, in this wickedly sensuous short story by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, the New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic。

Judith knows her sister, Alice, is the pretty one—but that doesn’t stop her from wishing for love。 When a handsome and gentlemanly hunter appears in their village, seeking lodging from the cold, she believes her lover has finally arrived。 He does, indeed, choose to stay—but as Alice’s husband, not her own。 When another stranger comes out of the woods, looking every bit a vagrant, he offers Judith something mysterious and enticingly strange。 Against reason and decency, she welcomes both men into her life, in different ways。 As forbidden longings ensnare each of them, an unrelenting winter storm and an evasive wolf on the prowl have everyone on edge…and ravenous。 By spring thaw, will any of their hungers be satisfied?

I LOVED this short story! It was fun and twisted。

A shirt, sweet, but creepy fairytale。 Nothing too special but kept me occupied。 This was apart of Amazon’s first reads for the month of October。 “Love! I went for a short story in an attempt to sort my reading slump out。。。 Aaaaaaaaah! perfection!I really love things that feel like Grimms Fairy tales (I used to read this as a kid - it was basically glued into my hands)。 This story has that feel, there's a bit of romance, but only in the same way that there is in some of Grimms - super quick read, I really loved the style and the feel - Can we have a whole novel in this style please?Short stories to the rescue! As promised, it is a short story。 The synopsis tells you exactly what's going to happen, and the ending is obvious from very early in the story。 Not bad, just not very satisfying。 As promised, it is a short story。 The synopsis tells you exactly what's going to happen, and the ending is obvious from very early in the story。 Not bad, just not very satisfying。 。。。more

Boy, this was bad。 Luckily, it was free and it was short。 It saves me the trouble of wondering if I would enjoy this author’s writing。 I would not。 Immature, at best。

This was my first SMG book and I loved it。 In it's short 40 pages it was atmospheric with well written characters and a page turning plot。 Perfect quick dark fairy tale vibes for spooky season。 This was my first SMG book and I loved it。 In it's short 40 pages it was atmospheric with well written characters and a page turning plot。 Perfect quick dark fairy tale vibes for spooky season。 。。。more

Today I chose to read this short story from this months Amazon first reads。 It was actually one I would have liked to continue a little more。 I’m not usually one to read short stories often but I found this one to be interesting。 This short story is about a woman searching for love but finding it in the wrong places。 Will she one day realize her great love is actually living amongst the trees? It reminds me of a dark grimms fairytale。 Just a reminder it is only a short story so only 42 pages。 Ke Today I chose to read this short story from this months Amazon first reads。 It was actually one I would have liked to continue a little more。 I’m not usually one to read short stories often but I found this one to be interesting。 This short story is about a woman searching for love but finding it in the wrong places。 Will she one day realize her great love is actually living amongst the trees? What a wicked little fairtale。This story immediately reminded me of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales。 If you like that sort of vibe, you'll mostly enjoy this。This is a short story to be read in one sitting and the moral is twisted。 The writing is decent but I felt it was a little stiff and a few things in the story were off for me, which is why I took off a star。 Follow a young maiden as she tries to understand her destiny and how she fits into her own world。 She's supposed to find her lover accor What a wicked little fairtale。This story immediately reminded me of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales。 If you like that sort of vibe, you'll mostly enjoy this。This is a short story to be read in one sitting and the moral is twisted。 The writing is decent but I felt it was a little stiff and a few things in the story were off for me, which is why I took off a star。 Follow a young maiden as she tries to understand her destiny and how she fits into her own world。 She's supposed to find her lover according to an omen of sorts but what she finds is more than she expected。 。。。more

The Lover is a short story and I’m just not sure what to make of this story。 It was extremely hard to get into this story。 Just the way it started was weird and it gets really repetitive by having the same line several times。 I actually got so turned off that I had to step away and then try again several days later。 I think this story had the potential to be good but there were just so many issues that it didn’t succeed in my opinion and I can’t recommend this to anyone to read。

I didn’t love Mexican Gothic by this author but I saw the cover on the Amazon First Reads list and had to try it out。 I felt similarly about this book as I did Mexican Gothic - while it was intriguing and I really wanted to know what was going to happen, I just didn’t feel too moved or impressed in the end。 It did take me a little bit of thought to understand the ending and I like that it made me think。 This has a clever ending but not super memorable。

Alyssa

Short but wonderful。 I've never read anything else by this author。 I believe I've been missing out。 Grab this one next time you're waiting for an appointment/have a free lunch break。 You won't regret it! Let me start by saying this is NOT my style of book。 While I didn’t like it, I don’t think it deserves less than 3 stars because honest it’s a well written storyline, even though I feel like I did need something more。 It was very predictable as well。 I choose to read this because it’s the same author from Mexican Gothic and I wanted to get a feel for her style, but I think I may pass on that since I don’t think it’s my style of book either。 *Received for free as a part of Prime Reading*

-- Amazon First Reads --Such a fun little story。 Silvia Moreno-Garcia is such a great author, big fan。

The Lover follows the beats of many classic fairy tales。 Moreno-Garcia is a great writer, but nothing feels very new or interesting here。 It just kind of fell mid-tier for me。

Kelsey
